Crooked River District

July 16, 2021

Thanks for taking the time to read this July 2021 newsletter for the new Crooked River District of BSA Great Trail Council. In case you aren’t familiar with our new structure, Crooked River encompasses the former MOECOMDWS District and most of the former Seneca District – essentially northern Summit County and Portage County. There is a lot of energy in this new district as we work to overcome the challenges posed by COVID-19 over the past year and provide a high-quality program for our scouts and families. This newsletter is mailed each month to all Crooked River registered volunteers and subscribers. If you have questions, feel free to e-mail me at Jake.Jackson@scouting.org. If you are looking to unsubscribe, there is a button at the bottom of this e-mail that you can utilize.

Send your photos, stories, achievements, and anything else to gtcbsa@gtcbsa.org for a chance to be featured on our council’s Instagram and Facebook page!!

Top 5 Things to Know for June 2021:

  • August 10th will be our Popcorn Kick-off. If that date doesn’t work, with advance notice, you may also attend one of the other district’s dates – 8/9 for Stambaugh, 8/11 for Canal, and 8/14 for Soaring Eagle. It is important to have someone from your unit attend to pick up the tasting kits, selling materials, and any upcoming changes to process and dates. We will be holding the kickoff meeting at 6:30pm at The Kent Stage – 175 E Main St, Kent, OH 44240.
  • August 12th will be our Roundtable Kickoff at Plum Creek Park, Shelter #1 in Kent. The address is: 590 Plum St, Kent, OH 44240 This is a change of venue from our original location. As usual, the focus of this Roundtable will be Membership as we head into the recruitment season. Your district membership chair and committee have been hard at work making some new materials available to you for a successful fall recruitment. Please make every effort to attend and learn what they have to offer.
  • We will be having our District Pinewood Derby on August 21st at the Amphitheater in Cuyahoga Falls. We will be utilizing the Pavilion if in case of rain. Please watch for additional information as the details come together, but we plan to have the winners from last year as well as this year participate as we had to cancel last year due to the pandemic. Many thanks to James Smith and Pack 3171 for hosting this event.
  • Many of you have scouts returning to your units and leaders who are transitioning to new positions. Please make sure you are getting the necessary paperwork into the office or my.scouting.org system to have these changes take effect. If we don’t have the paperwork, a scout is not actually registered and isn’t covered by insurance. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to reach out.
  • “Friends of Scouting” – Thank you to all who have been able to make a pledge / gift to support scouting in the Great Trail Council. For those who are interested but have not made a gift, please visit www.gtcbsa.org/crookedriver to make your donation. Remember, $0.86 of every dollar goes directly to program. Please continue to help keep scouting affordable to all families in our Council.

Additionally:

  • We still have someone interested in starting a new crew in the Crooked River District. The focus of the crew will be Radio. If there’s anyone strongly interested in Radio, please let me know as we work to gather a group to create this new Crew. We have several adults in place, we currently need interested youth. Please e-mail jake.jackson@scouting.org with names of those who may have interest.
  • In March of 2020, a new LinkedIn Group was created consisting of Eagle Scouts from Troops in the Moe District or Eagle Scouts living in the Moe District. They have been meeting monthly via Zoom and have conducted some “Adult Merit Badges” conducted by some very impressive Eagle Scouts. The group has opened itself up to any Eagle Scout who wishes to join. If you are an Eagle Scout or know of one who may be interested in joining the group, please reach out to Zac Tharp at ztharp@hudsonfinancial.com or Jake Jackson at jake.jackson@scouting.org or visit our LinkedIn Group at https://www.linkedin.com/groups/12383111/
  • Beginning with the September Roundtable, we will conduct our Roundtables on the 2nd Thursday of the month at Kent UCC, 1400 E. Main St, Kent, OH 44240

Training Opportunities:

Adult training is vitally important for keeping scouting safe and making sure everyone is getting the most benefit from the scouting experience. All adult leaders must be Youth Protection trained, and it’s a good idea for all scout parents to experience the training, which is available online. Additionally, all Pack and Troop leaders, committee chairs, and direct contact leaders are assigned certain position specific trainings based on their position. Please take the time to complete these trainings as they are meant to help you provide the best program for our youth. If you have any questions about training, contact Jericho Johnson at jericho.who@gmail.com.
Please visit https://www.gtcbsa.org/calendar-events to view any upcoming training events and link to the registration page.
